03

How sentences are counted

A sentence ends with a period, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis followed by a space or line break, or with the full-width 。!? used in Chinese and Japanese. Numbers like 3.14, web addresses and common abbreviations such as Mr., Dr. and e.g. do not end a sentence.

Text separated by a blank line, such as a heading, counts as its own sentence even without a final period. The rules are the same as in our Word Counter, so both tools always agree.

04

What is a good sentence length?

Plain-language guides often suggest an average of about 15–20 words per sentence, with a mix of short and longer sentences. Sentences over 25–30 words are harder to follow, so they are worth a second look. These are guidelines, not rules: the right length depends on your audience and purpose.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my sentence count different from another tool?

Sentence detection is a heuristic, and tools treat abbreviations, headings and lists differently. This counter ignores common abbreviations, decimals and URLs, and counts a line without end punctuation as a sentence when it is separated by a blank line.

Are headings and bullet points counted?

A heading or list item on its own paragraph counts as one sentence. Lines that follow each other without a blank line between them belong to the same sentence unless one ends with punctuation.

How is average sentence length calculated?

It is the total number of words divided by the number of sentences. The median shows the middle sentence length, which is less affected by a few very long sentences.

What counts as a long sentence?

By default, any sentence over 25 words is flagged. Change the limit under Sentence length to match your style guide.

Does it work for other languages?

Yes for languages that end sentences with . ! ? or …, including Spanish ¿? and ¡!, and for Chinese and Japanese full-width punctuation. Abbreviation handling is tuned for English.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Sentences are counted in your browser, and long texts are processed in a local background thread.
