What is lorem ipsum?

Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin placeholder text, derived from a passage of Cicero's “De finibus bonorum et malorum” written in 45 BC. Designers and typesetters have used it for decades to fill layouts with text that looks natural but does not distract from the design.

Because the words are not meaningful, readers focus on typography, spacing and layout instead of the content. Replace it with real copy before publishing, and do not use it where real content is needed for accessibility or SEO.

Frequently asked questions

Is lorem ipsum real Latin?

Partly. It comes from a real Latin text by Cicero, but words were cut, altered and added over time, so it does not read as proper Latin and has no coherent meaning.

Can I generate an exact number of words?

Yes. Choose Words and enter the count. The output has exactly that many words, ending with a period.

How do I get lorem ipsum as HTML?

Why does the text change when I press Regenerate?
