Paragraphs appear here as you type.
Paste an essay, article or document to count its paragraphs instantly. Each paragraph is listed with its own word, sentence and character count, so you can see at a glance how your text is structured and where it gets dense.
Choose whether paragraphs are separated by blank lines or by every line break, flag paragraphs above a word limit, and sort them from longest to shortest. Copy the paragraphs with clean blank-line spacing or download a CSV. Everything happens in your browser.

How paragraphs are counted
By default, a paragraph is a block of text separated from the next by at least one empty line, which is how most documents, emails and Markdown files are written. Lines that contain only spaces count as empty. This is the same rule the Word Counter uses.
Some apps and websites separate paragraphs with a single line break instead. Choose “Every line break” for that kind of text and each non-empty line is counted as its own paragraph.
How long should a paragraph be?
There is no fixed rule. On the web, short paragraphs of roughly 40–80 words are easier to scan, while academic writing often uses paragraphs of 100–200 words. If a paragraph runs past about 150 words, consider whether it covers more than one idea.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my paragraph count look too low?
Your text probably uses single line breaks between paragraphs. Switch “Paragraphs are separated by” to “Every line break” and each line will be counted separately.
Are headings counted as paragraphs?
Yes. A heading on its own line, separated by blank lines, is counted as a short paragraph, just as a word processor would treat it.
Do empty lines or spaces count?
No. Empty lines and lines containing only spaces or tabs are ignored; several empty lines in a row are treated as one separator.
How are sentences and characters counted?
With the same rules as the Word Counter and Sentence Counter: abbreviations and decimals do not end a sentence, and characters are counted as you see them, so an emoji counts as one.
Can I fix text that has no blank lines between paragraphs?
Yes. Choose “Every line break”, then click “Copy paragraphs”. The copied text has exactly one blank line between paragraphs.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Paragraphs are counted in your browser, and long texts are processed in a local background thread.
